LRC Staff attends ALA Conference

The library staff just returned from the annual conference of the American Library Association, held July 9-15th in Chicago. Louis Mays, college librarian, presented on Saturday, July 11th. His program was entitled "Closing the Gap" and dealt with transitioning from high school to college. The program was sponsored by AASL and ACRL. Library staff visited the exhibits and brought back many new books that were personally autographed for the SSCC library. Louis heard Cokie Roberts speak at the PLA closing recognition. Everyone enjoyed touring the famous Chicago sites and eating some great Chicago style pizza. National Library Week @ Fayette

First National Library Week Celebration at Fayette LRC

April 12-18th marked National Library Week, the annual celebration of libraries and librarians. This year the Fayette LRC followed in the footsteps of the South LRC by hosting their first National Library Week activities. It was a small start to what we hope will become a much anticipated event for the students, faculty, staff and the community.

To begin our week Gigi Frogale, Library Assistant, organized a Teddy Bear Picnic for children with stories, crafts, goodie bags and a snack. Gigi read Teddy Bear Tears by Jim Aylesworth & The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Hungry Bear by Don Wood. The children made their own placemats for the picnic and enjoyed Teddy Grahams and fruit juice.

Resume Remedies was presented by Diana Febo, the Fayette Works One Stop Director. Diana shared some very helpful tips and information on how to compose a resume correctly as well as how to make your resume get noticed by potiential employers.

We closed the week with a wonderful display by Big Grass Farm Jewelry designer (and Southern State Community College instructor) Kristi Hall. Kristi brought some very unique pieces of jewelry and glassware which dazzeled the eye and caught the attention of many a passerby.

Overall, I think we had a very successful start to our National Library Week event. I look forward to next year when we are planning for bigger and better!

Babies babies everywhere!

Though we forgot to properly announce his birth with all of the excitement going on in our LRCs, we figured we'd best at least showcase some pictures of Thomas Edwards, born 12/2/08 to Luann Edwards, our North Campus LRC Manager. Thomas weighed 7 lbs 4 oz at birth and was 20 inches long, and he just keeps growing! His Mommy and Daddy are so proud of him, and big brother Joseph (22 months) thinks his little "brudder" is the best thing around.

LRC Staff: Are You Taking Advantage of the IUG?

Library staff at SSCC can get support for Millennium and other applications with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. by connecting to the Innovative Users Group (IUG) web site at http://www.innovativeusers.org/. Our institutional username is: iug0449. Our institutional password is: 89910449. Our Institutional postal code is: 45133. Use the IUG institutional login to update IUG contact information, renew membership in IUG, vote on enhancements, election of officers, Steering Committee, and amendments to bylaws. You can also view the membership database, view enhancements, and resources at the IUG clearinghouse.

Individual library staff members are encouraged to register for their own MyIUG login. The MyIUG login will allow individuals to customize their experience on the IUG web site, and participate in conference related activities such as program submission and commenting. Individual library staff will need the institutional IUG memebership number and zip code above to register.

What better way to learn more about Millennium and Innovative Interfaces than to set your own MyIUG login?

JULIE SALAMON EVENT

The Julie Salamon event held at the South Campus of Southern State on October 23 was well attended. There were approximately 50 people in attendance. Julie met with many friends who had known her as a child growing up in Seaman.

Julie talked about her life in Seaman, her college days and moving to the Big Apple (New York City). She discussed how she came to write her many books, including the book that the South Campus Reading Club is reading right now, “White Lies.” Several of the Reading Club members were in attendance and asked questions about the book.

We want to thank Julie Salamon for taking the time to come and Candee Basford for making the connection.

If you haven’t been to any of the South Campus LRC events, please put them on your calendar. We try to get different types of people and events in for your enjoyment and education. If you happen to know anyone that you think might be good for us to invite, please contact Mary Ayres (ext. 3681) or David Allen (ext. 3680).
